10 Days in Austin: 100 Bands & 100 Startups

austin-startup-week-logoACL Weekend One is here and Austin Startup Week begins on Monday!  It's everything we love about Austin: 10 days of incredible music, events, seminars, speakers, concerts, parties and discussions held here in Austin. Startup Week provides locals and visitors a chance to experience the excitement of Austin while learning about the city's tech startups and businesses. Current and graduate students as well as experienced professionals will have the opportunity to network with a range of business executive and managers promoting their companies and leading seminars. The entire week is packed with awesome events including some of our favorite picks highlighted below.

Monday, October 6

  • 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., SXSW Eco Demos and Lunchtime Concert in Brushy Square Park

SXSW Eco is an organization with a mission to enables the global community in exploring and engaging in new ways of achieving environmental sustainability in our world. Everyone is invited to join in on discussing the challenges of the modern world, and brainstorm solutions to achieve a sustainable environment. Demos are held from 10:00 to 2:00 p.m., with a live concert starting at 1:00 at Brush Square Park, located across the Austin Convention Center.

  • 3:00 p.m.  -  6:00 p.m., Built-in Austin Start-up Career Fair

The 4th Annual Startup Job Fair will kickoff events for ATX Startup Week. Current students, graduates, and experienced candidates have secured outstanding tech positions in the past through this job fair. The 2013 job fair connected more than 500 job candidates with 55 tech startup companies, and this year is another opportunity for you to join the ranks.

Tuesday, October 7

  • 2:00 - 5:30 p.m., App Strategy Workshop: Boost User Engagement, Retention, and Make Money

This workshop is hosted by the Application Developers Alliance and other industry experts aiming to help you convert your well-developed app into a money-making commodity. Different topics of discussion will include: the challenges of turning your app into a business, marketing your app, choosing partners, increasing users and revenue, and how to optimize performance and fix bugs. Come listen and pick the brains of notable speakers share their app success stories.

The 20 x 2's extreme popularity at past SXSW Interactive events has brought it's renowned presence to ATX Startup Week. The format poses a question of major interest to 20 different celebrities and opinionated speakers, who each have two minutes to respond with their wit and wisdom in responses which can be poignant, unpredictable, funny, or irreverent. The question for this session is "What were you thinking?"

Wednesday, October 8

  • 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., PR Over Coffee: How to Meet & Pitch Tech Writers 

At this session, renowned tech writer panelists, including Josh Rubin, Laura Lorek, and Stacy Higginbotham will discuss topics on: how to gain visibility for you tech startup through local and national writers, how Public Relations works for tech startups, and how to take advantage of the rules of the PR game.

  • 5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., The State of Health Tech in Austin Panel & Happy Hour

At this session, a distinguished panel of local health tech CEOs, including Jason Bornhorst from Filament Labs, and other industry leaders will discuss the current state of the overall health tech community in Austin. This is an informal session followed up by a happy hour for all attendees.

Thursday, October 9

  • 5:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m., ATX Startup Crawl

Come join your hosts for a free beverage. This event is an informal session reviewing all the activities of Austin Startup Week. This is also an excellent opportunity for you take care of last minute things such as handing in your resume to the tech startups and companies you may have overlooked. 

  • 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m., Austin PHP Monthly Meetup

At the PHP Monthly Meetup, Josh Butts will give a presentation on things to avoid in PHP coding. Having encountered through the internet practically every pitfall and mistake in coding PHP, Josh will be passing along to attendees what not to do when developing with this language. Issues covered will be security, performance, quirks of the language, and coding style.
