The 4 Best Tools for Google Apps Migration

Google Apps Migrations resources are those utilities which help in easily migrating a large amount of data to Google Apps. All of these Google Apps tools are utilized for various purposes and serve an organization for performance enhancement and data control.

The four most useful Google Apps Migration Resources are:

  • Google Apps Migration for Microsoft Exchange (GAMME)

  • Google Apps Migration for Microsoft Outlook

  • Google Apps Migration for Lotus Notes (GAMLN)

  • Google Apps Migration Directory Sync  (GADS)

The following is a brief overview of all the four Google Apps Migration resources mentioned above:

Google Apps Migration for Microsoft Exchange (GAMME)

A utility tool that can help Microsoft Exchange customers into transferring their corporate communications data such as calendar, contacts data, email etc. to Google Apps. The tool basically gives IT admins the facility to transfer data and also migrate hundred users at once. This can be done in three easy steps:

  1. Have specific settings in Google Admin console such as provisioning of API, presence of IMAP or Microsoft Exchange Server and client computer such as Microsoft Windows of every user’s computer.
  2. Creating CSV Files of all users that the IT admin wants to migrate mails of.
  3. Download and install the GAMME tool.

Google Apps Migration for Outlook

A utility that allows the individuals to migrate their calendars, email data and contacts from Microsoft Exchange/Local PST files to Google Apps account. In order for this to happen, the following requirements are requested:

  1. Set the Email Migration API option in Google Admin console
  2. Have Microsoft Windows (Windows 7/8 (32 or 64-bit)/Windows XP/Windows Vista (32 or 64-bit)) and Microsoft Outlook 2003/2007/2010/2013.
  3. Provision the users in Google Apps.
  4. Download the tool and install on each user’s computer.

Google Apps Migration for Lotus Notes

An IBM Lotus Notes application which will allow the IT directors to migrate Notes users with mail-in databases to Google Apps. This also includes migration of personal contacts, mails, groups and calendars along the data from Lotus Notes document library to Google Group. The following are the system requirements for GAMLN to work:

  1. Google Apps for Education or Business
  2. IBM Lotus Domino Server Release of 6.5+
  3. Installation of Notes Client with Domino Administrator
  4. Trust Server ID
  5. Microsoft Core XML Services 6.0

Google Apps Migration Directory Sync

A utility that deletes, adds or modifies user’s shared contacts, calendar resources, groups and OUs in Google Apps to match the IT director’s LDAP  directory server. GADS only synchronizes these components with LDAP server but does not change its information. Synchronizing these components can be very handy for the organization. For example by synchronizing the mailing lists in LDAP server, they can become parallel to public groups in Google apps. Such groups can then be used for controlling access to certain sites and documents. The company can also make private user-managed Groups that cannot be modified by GADS.

The key benefits of using this utility are:

  1. Gives the company total control since the utility runs on the user’s network and gives privacy.
  2. GADS has the ability to cache Google Apps information on directory Sync server locally and it does not save any LDAP data on the Directory Sync machine.
  3. It can enhance the organization’s efficiency as it helps with daily tasks and operations for a better performance.

These four utility tools can be very useful for any organization with data to be migrated to Google Apps. These utilities have made the process very easy and user-friendly. The detailed guides with instructions and walk-throughs are also available for these four utilities.
